What a configuration could hand over
Odoo documents its sales and stock interfaces well. A configuration can therefore be created as a quotation whose lines tie back to your products and pricelists. Which modules and fields are used is verified against your own installation.
Contact
The customer from the configurator could be matched against your Odoo contacts by email or company ID, and a new contact would only be created on the first enquiry.
Quotation
The configuration can create a quotation in draft state in Odoo, the record that becomes a sales order once confirmed. Confirming it stays with your salesperson.
Order lines
Options would be mapped to product variants by the attributes you already keep in Odoo. A dimension such as width or depth fits a custom attribute value rather than a new variant.
Chatter
A note with the 3D preview link and a summary of the options could be added to the quotation, so the salesperson has it on the record and on the phone.
What we need to connect it
Odoo's external API is only available on the Custom plan or a self-hosted installation; it does not work on the One App Free or Standard plans.
We need a dedicated user with Sales rights and that user's API key, which in Odoo 19 lasts three months at most, so we agree how it gets rotated.
We test the transfer on a copy of the database, for example an Odoo.sh staging branch, before it touches live quotations.
Together we go through products, attributes and pricelists and write down which option belongs to which attribute value.
Worth deciding up front
- For a product with many combinations, set the variant creation mode to Dynamically or Never, or Odoo would generate variants in advance that nobody will buy.
- XML-RPC and JSON-RPC are deprecated from Odoo 19 and scheduled for removal in Odoo 22, so a new connection would be built on the JSON-2 API.
- Every JSON-2 call runs in its own transaction, so we would create a quotation with its lines in one call to avoid leaving half a record behind.
Questions about this connection
Will the configurator's price override our Odoo pricelist?
You decide that. Lines can carry the price the configurator computed, or just the product and variant so your Odoo pricelist does the pricing; we settle it during mapping.
Will this work with Odoo Online?
Odoo Online needs the Custom plan for the external API. On a lower plan the connection would not run, so we confirm the plan before any design work.
Do we have to create thousands of variants for the configurator?
Thousands of variants are not needed if attributes with many values use dynamic variant creation or custom values. A variant is then only created for an actual order.
