What a configuration could hand over
Attribute combinations suit t-shirt sizes, not millimetres. The configurator resolves the combination and the price itself, so PrestaShop can receive one item that the cart and the warehouse both understand. How far the theme is touched is agreed during implementation.
Product customization
Dimensions and options can go into the product's customization text fields, which PrestaShop stores with the cart and shows on the order line.
Specific price
The calculated price could be written as a specific price tied to that particular cart and customer, leaving the product's catalogue price untouched.
Module and hooks
The product page button and the transfer into the cart can be handled by a small module attached to the product page and cart hooks.
Order
After checkout, the order line would carry the customization with the dimensions and the 3D preview link, which the warehouse and production both work from.
What we need to connect it
On versions 1.7 and 8 we need the Webservice switched on under Advanced Parameters and a 32-character key with rights to only the resources the connection uses.
On PrestaShop 9 we can use the Admin API instead, with an OAuth 2.0 client (client credentials) and a limited set of scopes.
The module would be installed first on a test copy of the shop with the same PrestaShop version, theme and modules.
We agree which customization fields are required and what they are called in each of your shop's languages.
Worth deciding up front
- The Webservice is off after installation and a key's rights are set per resource. We recommend a separate key for the configurator only, so it can be switched off at any time.
- A specific price is also tied to a shop and a currency, so with several shops (multistore) or currencies the calculation has to know where the customer is buying.
- Changes stay in the module, not in the core or the theme files, so a PrestaShop update does not overwrite them.
Questions about this connection
Do we have to create combinations for every dimension?
Combinations for every dimension are not needed. The product can have one combination or none, and the dimension and price would be carried by the customization and a specific price for that cart.
Will the connection survive the move to PrestaShop 9?
The Webservice remains in version 9 and the Admin API has been added alongside it. When you upgrade, we check the module and hooks on the new version, because themes and modules change with a major release.
