What a configuration could hand over
That is exactly where Shopify runs out for made-to-order products: dimensions and add-ons create more combinations than any variant list can hold. The configurator runs as a layer on the product page, prices the build by your rules, and can hand Shopify a finished line item. How it reaches the cart is verified against your theme and version.
Line item properties
Where the configured price matches an existing variant, that variant can go into the cart with the dimensions, options and 3D preview link attached as line item properties. Properties whose key starts with an underscore stay hidden from the customer.
Draft order
A price no variant covers can be carried by a draft order with a custom line item: title, price and the specification as custom attributes. The customer would then pay through the checkout link on the draft order's invoice.
Cart Transform
On Shopify Plus, a Cart Transform function can override the line item's title and price inside the cart, so the customer would go through the normal checkout with no extra step.
What we need to connect it
We would create the app for your store in the Shopify Dev Dashboard, because since 1 January 2026 Shopify no longer lets new custom apps be created in the store admin.
We need the store owner or a collaborator who can install apps and approve access to products and draft orders.
The theme change, meaning the product page button and the hidden cart properties, would be tested first on a theme copy or a development store.
Worth deciding up front
- A Shopify product currently allows up to 2048 variants and three options, so variants suit finished combinations while a dimension to the centimetre is better calculated by the configurator.
- Overriding the price with Cart Transform is only available on Shopify Plus and on development stores. On other plans the options are a draft order or a price tied to a variant.
- A custom line item in a draft order is not linked to a variant, so Shopify does not deduct stock for it. If you track component inventory, that needs its own solution in the design.
Questions about this connection
Do we have to move to Shopify Plus for the configurator?
Plus is not always required. Without Plus you can work with variants and line item properties or with draft orders; Plus adds the price override inside the cart. Which route fits is decided by your plan and how you take payment.
Will the merchant see the dimensions and the 3D preview on the order?
They can, if the connection is designed to store them as line item properties or attributes, which Shopify shows on the order line. The 3D preview link can be one of them.
