What a configuration could hand over
That openness is the advantage here. The configurator can put a line item into the cart at a price your rules produced, even where no ordinary WooCommerce price list would produce it, and the specification stays attached to the order all the way to dispatch.
Cart item
A small plugin can attach the configuration data to the cart item and set its price from the calculation, even when the product's catalogue price is only a base price.
Order item meta
Dimensions, material and the 3D preview link would be saved on the order as item meta, which WooCommerce shows in the order details.
Order via REST API
Where payment should follow a site survey, the configuration can create an order in Pending payment status and the customer would get a link to pay it.
Webhook
A webhook on order creation or update can tell production, accounting or the CRM that a job with a configuration has come in.
What we need to connect it
Writing through the REST API needs a key with read and write permission, generated under WooCommerce Settings, Advanced, REST API, and the site has to run on HTTPS.
The cart price would be handled by a plugin, so we need an administrator or your developer to deploy it.
The plugin and the webhooks would be tested first on a copy of the site running the same WordPress, WooCommerce and theme versions.
We agree which details the customer sees in the cart and the email and which stay internal.
Worth deciding up front
- WooCommerce delivers webhooks in the background through wp-cron by default, so on a low-traffic site they can arrive late. If speed matters, a server cron is worth setting up.
- New installs since version 8.2 keep orders in dedicated tables (HPOS). The plugin therefore has to work with orders through the WooCommerce interfaces, not directly in the database.
- The final price should always be recalculated on the server from the saved options, never taken from the browser, where it can be edited.
Questions about this connection
Will this work with our payment and shipping plugins?
To WooCommerce, an item with a calculated price is an ordinary cart item, so payment and shipping plugins should treat it like any other. The combination with your specific plugins is checked on the site copy.
Does the data stay with us?
Orders and item meta live in your own database, so the data stays with you. A copy of the enquiry can also be kept in the treede CRM if you want it there.
